Creating regular backups of your site helps protect your data against accidental file deletions, software update failures, or security issues. This guide outlines how to download full archival copies of your website data or restore individual site files manually.
Understanding the Two Backup Types Available
- Full Backup Archive File: Backs up your entire home directory, email files, configuration rules, and databases into a single un-restorable download file. This file is designed for moving your site to a new hosting provider.
- Partial Backup Restore Points: Backs up individual pieces of your account (e.g., just your database or your files) that can be easily restored through your cPanel panel.
How to Download a Backup Archive
- Log into cPanel and select Backup under the Files menu tray.
- To create an archive file for migration purposes, click Download a Full Account Backup, choose your backup destination, and click Generate Backup.
- To save copies for standard security points, look under Partial Backups and click on your Home Directory button, or select individual MySQL database names to download them directly to your machine.
How to Restore a Partial Backup
If something breaks on your site and you need to restore your files to an earlier state:
- Return to the cPanel Backup menu screen.
- Locate the section labeled Restore a Home Directory Backup or Restore a MySQL Database Backup.
- Click the Choose File or Browse button to select the partial backup file you previously saved on your computer.
- Click the Upload button to begin restoration. The server will process the files automatically and refresh your live website assets.
