Understanding Email Authentication: How to Setup SPF, DKIM, and DMARC in cPanel Print

  • 0

Major email services like Gmail, Yahoo, and Outlook utilize strict automated checks to confirm that mail bearing your company's domain name actually originated from your verified server infrastructure. If your domain lacks proper verification records, your business emails will often route directly to spam folders. This guide shows you how to protect your sending reputation.

What Are These Records?

Record Type Core Purpose
SPF (Sender Policy Framework) Lists all specific server IP addresses approved to send mail out on behalf of your domain.
DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail) Attaches a secure cryptographic digital signature key to the header of every outbound message.
DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication) Tells receiving mail servers what strict actions to execute if SPF or DKIM validation checks fail.

Step 1: Enabling SPF and DKIM via cPanel Email Deliverability

  1. Log into cPanel.
  2. Under the Email section, select Email Deliverability.
  3. Locate your target domain name in the list. If it displays a red warning stating "Problems Exist," click the Repair button next to it.
  4. Review the system recommendations, then click Repair once more to automatically generate the appropriate DNS text entries directly inside your server zones.

Step 2: Deploying a Basic DMARC Entry

Once SPF and DKIM are resolved, you must construct a text entry to tie them together.

  1. Return to the cPanel main board and select Zone Editor under the Domains section.
  2. Click Manage next to your active domain configuration.
  3. Click the + Add Record dropdown button and select Add TXT Record.
  4. Enter the following parameter settings:
    • Name: _dmarc.yourdomain.com. (Replace with your actual domain)
    • TTL: 14400
    • Record Value: v=DMARC1; p=none; rua=mailto:reports@yourdomain.com (This initial monitoring rule observes delivery behaviors without dropping failing mail instantly)
  5. Click Save Record.
